Fresh water in a new pool. Water added 72 hours ago. This is our third test (once per day) using test strips while waiting for Taylor kit.
TC 5
FC 3
PH 7.8
TA 160
CYA unknown. 4 pounds ( recommended amount) was added 2 days ago.

Complicating factor: currently without power for the past 24 hours due to bad weather. Estimated time to get power back on is more than 24 hours. May be 48 hours.

Per pool math I added liquid chlorine to come up to 5 ppm.

I would love to add MA to lower pH but wasn’t sure if it’s a good thing to do since the pumps are off. Worried about disbursement.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

A pH of 7.8 is just fine. Leave it alone. Even if it gets above 8 for a day or two will do no damage.

Keep your FC up to top of the range. You added enough CYA to raise to 36. Consider your CYA 40. Top of the range is 7. Keep it there or even 8, or 9. Brush a few times a day. In the heat of the summer, you can easily lose 4ppm per day. At 5FC you will be algae territory quick. At 8 or 9, you will protect the downside of high FC loss and algae getting hold.

Sorry to be dense. Are we brushing to keep the water stirred up? Our pool hasn’t been backfilled yet and we had a torrential amount of rain so I’m standing in a mud pit and can’t easily get around the perimeter of the pool. I have a cheap robot that came with our pool package. If I ran that a couple of times a day is that a substitute for brushing? I’ll change my free chlorine calculations to desired level of 8 ppm as you suggested. Thanks.

Brushing is to break the biofilm on any algae that might be present. Slows the growth of algae on the walls.

Raise that FC.

Yesterday we added 68 oz 12.5% liquid chlorine. No MA because of power failure and no pumps
Today’s test results:
FC 3
PH 7.8
TA 160
Pool temp 80, outside temp 78.
Our power is back on and pump is running. No heater yet, install is in a couple of days.

Added 68 oz Liquid chlorine based on desired FC 8ppm
Added 50 oz 20’ Be MA to decrease ph to 7.2 goal.

Testing still using strips, Taylor kit comes tomorrow.

We brushed once yesterday and ran cheap pool robot. Skimmed today and vacuumed while we swam this morning. Will brush now but it’s difficult because our pool is not backfilled yet and we don’t have good access and pool/air temp makes it too cold to get in this evening.

Thanks for your support. I know this is a process.
