Testing for CYA with Taylor K2006 not registering

Hi I have tested my water with the R 013 but the water doesn't cloud up and the black dot just gets hazy. According to the reading my CYA would be 40. Am I doing something wrong? I have read the instruction repeatedly.

Test readings are as follows:
Fc 7

Cc les than .3

PH 7.6

Ta 100000

CYA 40

Does this sound right or am I testing wrong?
The water looks great crystal clear on opening, but I'm still slamming the pool. Just to be safe.

Thanks for all the help.

The water is hazy still slightly clear the 40 came from filling the small tube with solution I mixed in the small bottle to 7ml and then r0013 to 14ml, when I fill the small test tube the black dot is still slightly visible.

You don't fill up the small test tube all at once. You fill it up small amounts at a time until the black dot disappears. If you can still see the dot when it is full, you don't have much if any CYA.

Here is a link to the Taylor web site to show what the dot should look like when it is gone. Test it again and report back.

I'd recommend keeping a log book/post-it-note for a few days so you can easily track changes in your pool.

Thanks Afton, the mid test picture looks identical to my results. Maybe I need to wait longer than the 30 second mixing time for the reaction to take place or possibly I have very little CYA. I had hoped that it wouldn't be to high for the fact I used pucks for the 5 weeks after I finished the install last summer.

How much CYA have you dissolved in to the pool? If only the pucks from last year, you may not have much. CYA does degrade a little over time.

I haven't added any CYA I wanted to wait until I got my Taylor test kit to measure it. It is alot more complex than the 5 way kit I used last year. I am new to this that's why I came hear to get help and learn. ;)

So I tested again last night when I got home from work and again this morning. My results are as follows:

FC 8
CC 0
PH 7.4
TA 170
CH 60
CYA 0

does this sound correct? The TA is extremely high it took 17 drops to complete the test and multiplied it by 10 like the instructions said.

I'm trying really hard not to screw this up so I don't give my wife a reason to complain.

I think the actual labor to put the pool up was easier than maintaining the water chemistry.

Start adding CYA. Use PoolMath to calculate how much is needed to raise your CYA to 30PPM. Place that amount in a tube sock and hang in front of a return or place in your skimmer. Keep your pump on all the time until the granules of CYA are dissolved. Squeeze the sock every now and again and it will dissolve faster.

Follow the FC/CYA chart for 40 PPM CYA until you can test again (after all the granules have dissolved and you have let it circulate for 24 hours or so).

Take care.

My first post was about reducing TA, its is still over 200. It is not a big issue and you can work on it over time. Your pH should rise some because the the higher TA and you can us acid to reduce the pH which will reduce your TA. Plug your numbers into Pool Math and see what your CSI is. If your not at risk of scaling then don't worry about the TA.

The stabilizer/CYA is there to protect your chlorine from the sun, so as instructed above shoot for 30 or so and start to enjoy the pool.

Thanks spin, I had bought a 4lb container last August would it still be usable?

Yep, just don't backwash your filter for a few days after adding. You want to make sure it's dissolved, and backwashing could shoot out and undisolved granuals that are stuck in filter.

Put it in a sock and place it in skimmer (don't completely block water flow) or over the return jet and let it absorb. Squeeze the sock every few hours if you can to help speed it up. Test CYA a few days later to confirm.

Once you get to 30 and have water balanced, you may find it beneficial to raise CYA up to 40-50 range to slow down your daily FC loss. I find 50 best for me right now.

Update I have added 4 lbs of clorox stabilizer a few days ago. Test results came out almost perfect.:D
FC 7
CC .5
PH 7.4
TA 170
CH 60
CYA 50

I had extremely high TA last year with the original filling, I'm not worried about it I will bring it down with muratic acid and airate to keep the PH up.

Thank you everyone for the help we had our first day over 90 today this truly was an oasis.

:nopic:

You don't need to aerate. Just lower pH when it gets too high and let swimmers do the aeration. Your CH is so low there's no risk of scaling at that TA.
