Hello!

I've been a pool owner for ten years now, and a TFP member for the last six. I can say those have been the smoothest. That said, it has not exactly been "smooth". I am not the original owner of my one and only pool. Here is a summary of the issues I've encountered in those ten years:

1) Equipment wiring code violations
2) Pool filter sand in pool
3) Pool filter sand in pool drain line / clogged drain line
4) Broken sand filter laterals
5) Burned out pump
6) Circuit breaker issue preventing pump startup
7) Cracked / leaking plumbing at equipment
8) Valves installed backwards
9) Leaking pump / flooded yard
10) Suction leaks
11) Pool light deterioration
12) Pool light thermal fuse tripping
13) Pool light bonding issue
14) Pool liner leak / bucket test failure
15) High metal content / severe metal stains on liner and fixtures
16) Rust stains on steps
17) High CYA / partial drain and refill
18) Ripped pool liner
19) Liner popping out of track (multiple occurrences)
20) Broken / unremovable pool ladder
21) Mustard algae (multiple occurrences)
22) Chlorinator not functioning (replaced / multiple occurrences)
23) Liner wrinkles

I've probably forgotten a few. Is this typical?

I've solved or at least made progress on most of these thanks to TFP. I think I'd had every problem a pool can have except for liner wrinkles (23). Now with a new liner this season, I have that problem too. I'm stuck on 20 while 22 and 23 are a work in progress...

May you have an easier time with your next 10 years of pool ownership then your last 10 years.

Hopefully you have got all the gremlins out by now.

How old was the pool when you bought the house? Negligence of the previous owner(s) is likely the root cause of most of those issues.

The pool was about 10 years old and the liner was one year old. I can't blame everything on the previous owner, it was a well-maintained pool believe it or not. Twenty years is hard on a pool, in fairness. There were certainly shortcuts and mistakes made by the pool builder. Number 15 was a beast, and I believe it was caused or exacerbated by 14. It was part of my weekly routine to top off the pool with a hose, I attributed it to evaporation. Some of it was, some of it wasn't. But even a small amount of metal in your fill water will add up over time. I ran the hose through a metal trap, but I'm not sure it made a difference. You really don't want to have either of those problems.

A lot of these accessories are just so flimsy. What was Hayward thinking with those plastic sand filter laterals? When I removed the sand and held them in my hand, it was like Toht holding the dust from the Ten Commandments.

There were some accidents along the way like the roofing company dropping a large tarp on the equipment. The pool seems cursed, really. But I was thankful to have it last year.

I hit the ladder with WD-40 and a car jack and that thing ain't budging.

I gotta see this ladder! If its not removable perhaps it’s repairable 🤷‍♀️.
The tread has deteriorated and come off. It is an Inter-Fab Sure-Step ladder. I was just going to order three of the steps but they are no longer available. There's a substitution available but I'm not sure if they will fit yet.

Ouch! I’ve been fortunate. In 14 years, I’m on my 3rd SWCG and 2nd pump. I’ve had 2 very minor algae outbreaks that were easily cleared up. I also just replaced the fan motor on my chiller. Other than those little bumps, it’s been smooth swimming - about a pint of muratic acid once a week to keep pH in check, keeping skimmer baskets and pool as free of debris as I can, and cleaning my filter a couple of times a year - that’s my trouble free routine!

Hey C3C !! Slide a 2x4 under the top of the ladder rails. Like this. —l—l—. Use a lot of electric/duct tape to hold it underneath both rails. Smack upwards to pound the bottom of the 2x4 with a sledgehammer. It won’t take more than a couple of good taps and the 2x4 will take the dents, not the ladder. Actually with the current cost of lumber the 2X4 might cost more than the ladder.

Anywho that always worked for me.

It doesn’t look too bad (i was picturing a jagged rusty entrapment hazard 🤪).
I bet you could just find some rubber tread material that u could cut to fit exactly but i guess u would have to wait until u need to drain water to adhere it since they won’t come out.
I can’t believe u couldn’t remove/cut them out when the liner was out. That must have been a fun day
I know alot of people don’t like the look of ladders anymore but I like having them in the deep end.
On another note- That’s definitely some TFP water u have there! I bet no one even notices the ladder 😍

Oh and a tree fell into the pool this year. Let's not forget about that.

Hey Trichlor!
No wonder you forgot about that in your initial list - such a tiny stick that landed in your pool. Did your liner survive that? That would certainly have to go on the plus list...

Aside from the bonding issues a lot of your problems can be caused by the use of pucks and not constantly checking ph. When the ph goes into acidic it will destroy plastics. That’s what caused your laterals being so brittle And other issues.

Yeah that is fresh fill water. My job is to keep it looking like that.

Not fixing the stairs when the pool was drained was a bonehead move. I saw those snap-on treads online for sale and put it out of my mind. I went to order them and they aren't available. Dang! Yeah I'll have to glue something on there at the next opportunity.

I'll buy that on the laterals and high CYA, maybe the stairs, not much else. I've been doing BBB for six years and the pH is usually high, not low. The liner rips were all at the track well above the water line. The liner leak appears to have been due to a poor installation near the stairs.

Mostly it seems to be installation/cheap parts/bad luck.

hey C3C, have you considered going with a salt water chlorine generator?? I think all pools "down south" should be using one.

Maddie 🤘

I have a thread going to scope it out.

I'm not seeing it come together in my mind's eye yet but I'll keep at it.

Were those liner rips or the bead coming out?

I rarely find puck pools with ph above 7.0.

Have you tried MA on the ladder anchors? I’m betting they are locked in by calcium deposits. I use MA first then a pressure washer, they will come out.

You can see it in the photo above, the bead is ripped completely off of the liner. I started patching it in 2017 with spare material. It was a battle of ripping and patching and ripping and patching each year and last year I sort of gave up on it. That's another problem you don't want to have.

I've not tried the MA, good to know. Really I just wanted to get that off to clear roadblocks for the liner install. They worked around it, so it's mostly a non-issue at this point assuming I can jerry rig something for the missing tread. That said, I may revisit this if I ever get a safety cover (I had the pool measured for one but haven't received the quote for it).
