Teledyne-Laars Pool Heater Removal

Hi, I am a brand new member. I have an in ground 19X38 plaster over gunnite pool which was constructed in 1978. A Teledyne Laars pool heater was part of the original installed equipment. This heater has been disconnected for several years and abandoned in place and is the subject of this query. I now am in the process of dismantling and discarding the heater and my concern is what material was used to make up the firewall. Because of the age of this equipment, I am wondering if the firewall material might be asbestos, and if it is what to do about it. The material itself consists of 4 pikish-gray slabs measuring in the range of 2.25" thick of various lengths forming a square firebox above the burners. Below is a picture of the identification tag for this heater.

Hopefully there are some old timers here who can identify what the material in question is. In an effort to find some information I called the Laars corporation and they referred me to a company which supposedly inherited the brand which was also turned out to be futile. Hopefully there are some old timers here who can identify the material in question. I can send a picture of one of the slabs if necessary.

What a good question! To start with try calling this place Swimming Pool Supplies - Pool Parts - INYOPools.com them MIGHT know the answer. If they do not I would call an asbestos removal place and ask them where you can dispose of it. I bet you could go online and find out how to remove it safely. You just need to know where to take it!

If you would please come back and let us know what you find out so we can use it as a learning tool for others! THANKS!

It’s kind of funny.. the answer was on the tip of my tongue but I couldn’t remember..
