SWG monitoring

Hello all. I have a Circupool Edge 25. Two weeks ago the FC was 19 - the weather changed and I didn’t dial it back so it overproduced. I dialed it back a week ago and the FC came down to 5.5. It was 0.5 this morning so I turned the Boost on (first time I’ve ever used it) and measured again just now (almost 9pm) - still at 0.5. I’m going to run it over night and test it again in the morning.

If I measure no chlorine again in the morning, should I plan on SLAMing with liquid chlorine just in case there is algae, or is there any way to troubleshoot the SWG chlorine output?

Rod,

I suspect there is nothing wrong with your SWCG.. For the first couple of weeks, you need to be checking your FC every day until you get a feel for how your SWCG is working, and how much FC your pool uses each day.

SWCGs are good at maintaining FC, but not all that good about making large changes. You need to add liquid chlorine.

Use pool math and see how much liquid chlorine you need to increase your FC to 5 or 6. Add that much chlorine and then test again in an hour and see where you are. If the FC comes up to about 5 or 6 then turn the SWCG back on.

If the FC does not come up or just comes up a little bit, you will need to do an OCLT. Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

As Jim recommends I'd add some liquid to get your FC back in the high end of the range. I see you have plenty of CYA and your swg seems to be working great. It doesn't hurt to run FC a few ppm high then make small adjustments until you get to the high end of the range. Your FC level will cycle and chasing it will drive you nuts. So just make small adjustments and let FC cycle around the high end of normal.

CYA is 80. I felt like I had it dialed in pretty well, I was running it at 50% for 22 hours a day during this hot summer we have had here. A couple of weeks ago storms rolled through, the temp came down for a week or so, and that’s when that high measurement popped up. So I turned it down to 12.5% at 16 hours.

I’ll get some LC, thanks! Haven’t used these refill containers in about a year now

Yep that’s about what mine was at until peak summer. I probably shouldn’t have backed it off to 16 hours when the weather cooled down - I had been running it 23 hours per day until then.

Glad you caught the low FC, sounds like you have a plan to get it back to normal
I am on my 3rd year and still like the edge. Hope we get many years out of them

I found Pool Math to be a great predictor of swg settings. Your original setting was putting in over 6 ppm per day which is pretty high even for these summer temps. For reference 25 % for 22 hr runtime is about 3 ppm FC. You may want to gradually head there with your adjustments. With the massive change from the heat wave to the rain that Dallas area has seen it makes sense you would see the swing. We rarely get the massive changes like that here in Florida.

50%/ 22 hrs = 6.0ppm less the uv loss of about 4ppm so you may net 2ppm fc/day if even that much. Now you had it set for 12.5%/16 which produces 1.1ppm at best. You say for one week it was set like this which means you had zero fc for 2-3 days. I will say do the OCLT tonight because tomorrow it'll be worse as I bet you already have algae that's why you're not gaining on the FC at all.

I find I have had to increase time and % over what the pool math calculator shows. I tracked FC when I first got this installed and factored in an estimated loss per day variable. Seemed to be pretty accurate, and right in line with seasonal changes. My wife delivered suddenly last week on testing day or else I think I would have caught it at 1-2ppm

Yes, that's the place. Sounds like you're really getting the hang of adjusting the swg. This tool just makes it easier. normally I found I could just make a seasonal change once or twice per year. The extended hot sunny weather this year that you are experiencing would probably have required one or two changes as you have done.

Another thing I have learned about the edge is it will work with salt levels around 2800 and not complain but seems to do best around 3500.

I need to follow up on the Effects of Adding in Pool Math for the SWG.

(#'s used are just for examples)

Process
1. Go to Effects of Adding
2. Select correct SWG (in my case a Jandy PLC1400, with 1.25 for 24hour SWG output)
3. Select Free Chlorine Generated (selecting "65%")
4. Select Pump Run Time (selecting "20" hours)

The calculation then shows the effect is"Raise FC by 2.5" . the keyword being RAISE, so i would 'ASSUME that actually means RAISE from the current FC level. But that doesn't quite make sense. Cause the value of 2.5 doesn't change based on what my FC might currently be.

Example1: If I put in my FC as 8, into Pool Math, then do this effect change, it still says the effect is RAISE FC by 2.5 (so I read that as having 10.5, estimated).
Example2: If I put in my FC as 2 into Pool Math, then do this effect change, it still says the effect is RAISE FC by 2.5 (so I read that as having 4.5, estimated)

Something isn't right with that. Is the effect that it would RAISE by 2.5 or does it mean the effect would be that your FC would settle at 2.5? And does it figure current CYA in the process too?

Just ran your numbers and that's correct. It'll add the 2.5ppm but if your loss is 4ppm/day then your still coming up short. You need to be in target + level and produce your daily loss amount.
