The official answer is when it needs it. (Which doesn’t help at all). You have to take it apart and inspect it every few months. My Pentair recommends every 3 months. If you see any discoloring or white scale, it’s time. Depending on chemical balance they can go a year or several and be perfectly fine.
Also if you do clean it, Use 50/50 water and Muriatic acid. It will foam or bubble if there is anything built up. Stop once the bubbles do. Any more than that is eroding the plates and shortening the lifespan.
