Startup SWG chlorinator salt for new pool

hi, well i buy from Bunnings our huge local hardware outlet here they would sell tons to family's i would think turnover would be good
That could work two ways, and I've seen this in my local big box store. They set out a pallet of chlorine (in boxes). I can see the date codes. They sell a bunch of it, but not all of it, then restock the pallet. But they don't rotate it, they just pile it on top. So now they've got new stuff on top, and old stuff on the bottom. That older stuff will sit there, buried, until they eventually stop restocking and sell enough to get to that row of boxes. Then people grab that, and it might be months, many months, old by then. That's just one way they handle chlorine incorrectly. But the employees aren't pool people so they have no idea chlorine gets old...

Point is, without the date code, you'll never know what you're getting. It's another tick mark in the SWG column of the SWG vs liquid chlorine debate. SWG chlorine is always fresh!

hi, ok i will look at pool math i was googling everywhere and didn't think to look at pool math....i will have a look at than now, i am now running it for 5 hours at 100%, thanks

i just checked again on the Watermaid website if you look up Eco blend RP9 it shows a pic and says 30 grams per hour at 100%

Watermaid EcoBlend Salt Water Mineral Chlorinator 94500244
OK, I saw a similar model but clearly not the right one that was 35 gr/hr. Same thing works just use the correct output for your model.

i have noticed just recently in one corner a light colour green patch about 1 foot long , i gave it a scrub and mostly gone hardly noticeable but its still there very faintly

...hmmmm, don't like the sound of that. Looks like you have some algae lurking in the water. I think OCLT is the next step.

just put in your figures to Effects of adding.

hi, i cant see anywhere to input all the info when i open , effects of adding, see pic, i did notice in my setup i have not put the data in the " 24 hour swg chlorine output" box, i looked up Watermaid but pool math does not have my model, but do have model EZ300, it puts out 1.58 pounds over 24 hours, i checked and thats exactly what my RP9 does, 30 gram per hour, 720 gram 24 hours, 1.58 pounds, so i selected that and its now saved in my pool math settings

but still cant see anywhere to input data into effects of adding....

You can also define your SWG parameters in the settings for your pool (tap the wheel in the top right corner), then effects of adding will remember that for next time:

Only if no FC is consumed. You want to get your FC to your target and then be adding the amount that's normally consumed per day. So if you have 3 ppm and you're adding 4.1 ppm this time of year in Australia you could well remain at 3 ppm since that amount may be depleted daily just from interaction with sun's UV. I would add enough liquid to get to target, say 6 ppm with your swg set to add 4.1. If your FC slowly rises cut it back a little. If it stays in an acceptable range then just leave it alone. If it slowly drops then increase run time a little. This illustrates why you need daily testing 'till you get to know how your system behaves.

Waaaaay back in post #37, I gave you a method for fine-tuning your SWG in order for it to maintain your target FC... You can try it out once you pass the OCLT.

i didnt think of that, i wont hit target as its getting consumed from sun , ok so i understand now, its 8am i tested and its now FC 6, i have it set to add 4.1, i will test again tonight and see where its at, and keep testing every day till i get it to hold around FC6, seems simple now i understand it, thanks

i did the oclt test, last night after 12 drops it was FC6 showing a very very slight hint of pink virtually clear, added 1 more drop dead clear, so its 6 to 6.5 at night , probably around 6.2

in morning 8am 12 drops dead clear FC6, so i am thinking it dropped less than FC 0.5 overnight

i understand what to do with setting SWG now and also learnt Chlorine dont last so i will buy from our big poolshop in future , so i guess i am ok for now , but you all know ill be back with more questions......

Let go of the fractions. "Dead clear" is done, not "slight hint of pink." Last night it was 6.5, This morning it was 6. Were there people swimming in the pool yesterday? Their "leavings" might account for the 0.5 difference overnight.

Technically, you passed the criteria of less or equal then 1ppm loss in the OCLT. But considering you do have a green patch, I'd recommend to SLAM anyway. I reckon, it shouldn't take longer than one or two days catching the algae that early, important is to keep brushing.

There seems to be a bit of algae present that you keep in check by brushing and staying above min FC - that's why you probably don't see much loss in the OCLT.

It would probably be enough to have a big pool party, FC dropped due to bather load, and the algae took over, suddenly creating high chlorine demand.

Better to tackle it now, shouldn't take long, you can keep using the pool up to SLAM level as long as you can see the pool bottom.
