This year was my first 'opening' after adding SWG last summer and boy was it a mess. I had some ugly stains on the pool liner by the main drain from the winter (looked like leaves, possibly some worms in various spots). I made what I believe are a few mistakes and am now trying to do this right. My first readings showed a pH of 7.5, TA of 60, no chlorine, and no CYA. After cleaning dirt and debris, rather than start with the SLAM process I jumped in and used a stain remover (Bosh Vanish citrus-based pool stain remover). It's like I completely forgot about this forum and the process... Didn't take long for the pool to turn very cloudy and that took a week to get cleared up. The stains have lessened (I'll add some before and after pics) but need more work to remove them. This forum has shared other preferred methods to remove the stains and I will tackle those after I get through the proper SLAM process and have the pool running properly.

Current readings are
pH 7.8, TA 90, CH 225, no chlorine, and no CYA

Based on what I've read I'll first be getting the pH down to 7.2, then I'll be getting the CYA up to ~40ppm, then I'll work on SLAM. After that, I'll see where my salt levels are, and hopefully, in the near future I'll turn on the SWG and we'll be ready for summer. No doubt this would've been easier had I started there but maybe others can learn from my mistakes. This picture shows the stains upon first opening. That was clear blue last year when we closed it. I'll share another picture of the stain as it stands today (post the first stain remover attempt).

Target 30ppm CYA as that will give you a SLAM level of 12ppm FC. Buy lots of LC with 24k gal pool.
Lower pH as you indicated. Since you are just opening, is your DE filter clean and ready to go?
Test 3 times a day to maintain FC at SLAM level.
Print out the SLAM Process as there as been some updates to it.

Thanks! Waiting for pH to lower now and then CYA next. Will be heading out to buy liquid chlorine soon. Pool has been ‘open’ for a few weeks now and I’ve cleaned the filter a few times, especially after then stain remover cloudy issue. Would you recommend cleaning de filter again after pH is down and CYA is up, but before SLAM?

It is always best to have a clean filter before a SLAM so as a minimum I would backwash it.
Be aware that adding CYA will also lower pH so maybe add the stabilizer now before any MA.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll take the grids out of the filter and rinse them clean once I get the CYA taken care of.

Finally was able to get the time to work on this and get the CYA above 30. Started the SLAM process last night, putting in 3 gallons of liquid chlorine (that's what the calculator in the app recommended to start), and almost a day later the FC level is still a 14 (basic chlorine measurement is a 10), so it's holding. The pH went up from 7.2 to 7.8 in the process, TA from 90 to 100, and CH from 225 to 325. Will keep an eye on the chlorine levels tomorrow and if they are holding, start adjusting the other chemicals slightly, and then we should be ready to turn on the SWG, unless I'm missing something along the way.

The SLAM Process has specific criteria that should be met before stopping.
Also, there is no need to test pH, CH, etc while in SLAM mode. Tests such as pH are not accurate when FC is above 10, and the other tests are not important at this time.
Ensure you meet the criteria to end a SLAM before adjusting other parameters .

Thanks, Herman. Yes, it met that after the first day (probably because the pool has been open for a few weeks and the water was clear already). CC was 0, hardly lost any chlorine overnight (a few days later it's still pretty high) and there were no visible signs of algae. Now to adding enough salt to allow the SWG to start working again. Thanks for the help!
