I started my SLAM last night and have a few questions.

1) I read I should brush down all pool toys, tanning ledge chairs, and etc. (currently they are out of the water). Do I do this in the pool, make a separate bucket of highly chlorinated water, or use some other chemical?
2) Should I target my chlorine level 1/2 ppm over the SLAM level to account for losses due to the sun?
3) Should I clean my filters during the process?

Thanks in advance,
Blake

Anything that can come out of the pool gets like the chairs gets cleaned in the yard. Mix up a bleach bucket and scrub away. It doesn't have to be crazy strong. A cup per gallon is plenty and easy on your hands. Clorox cleaner spray is easy to use if you have it.

SLAM level is fine. It burns off as a % of the CYA and loses efficiency when you overshoot, which is how they came up with SLAM in the first place. It's the bang for the buck level. There is no harm in overshooting a little besides some wasted chlorine.

1) You can do it with pool water.
2) No need, just slam level. More important to check and add often (like every 2 hours), than going above slam level. More often will speed the process. Going above will not.

Thanks for the responses.

I just thought of some thing else. I went ahead and started my SLAM with a CYA of 60. I do plan on doing a 24 hr Mustard algae kill off. Based on the chart it says I need a FC level of 35ppm for the mustard algae. Will chlorine at this level be damaging to my pool and/or equipment in anyway?
