what causes the staining around pool floor drains in painted and vinyl liner pools ?? i should have used the word fading perhaps ,,, im wondering why there often is fading around the main drain ,,,,, is that caused by water movement ? or what ? always wondered about that and one of my employees just serviced a new painted pool and he mentioned that the paint was already faded around the floor drains and asked me why that happens and i didn't know but always wondered ,,,,, ????

Chlorine is heaver than water. So in a pool with poor circulation it is possible that chlorine concentration is greater at the very bottom of the pool. That might be a cause. But it would be unusual because chlorine tends to go into solution quickly when its added to the pool.

I've never seen this before.

Paint is also a very poor quality surfacing material. It invariable degrades after a year or two and becomes chalky. If the drain has high flow rates associated with it, you can easily get physical erosion of the paint surface just from high water flow rates.
