Hello All,
I’ve been following TFP for the last three seasons going into my fourth. Tremendously helpful and this is my First time posting.
We opened the pool May 16 this year and was surprised our water was black. This is our fourth season opening the pool and it has always been a decent effort to clean up since we are surrounded by oak and tulip poplar trees. But it has never been as black as it was this year.
I followed SLAM protocol (with cal hypo 73) and after quite a few complete filter cleanings, the water has cleared up nicely. After the water was balanced, I switched to Austin Pool Tech liquid shock. However, there is now a tremendous amount of staining on the plaster, which is a first as the plaster was relatively clean when we closed the pool.
The stains seems like leopard prints on the walls and are grayish/greenish/brown in color. What’s stranger is there are inverse leaf stains on the plaster, meaning there is discoloration around where a leaf was on the floor, but the plaster is fine under the leaf. I’ve tried scrubbing with no effect. Tried the Vitamin C test and throwing some cal hypo 73 on a few spots, and neither made any changes. I also tried ascorbic acid after getting my FC levels down to 1ppm, and again, nothing. I tested for metals and nothing tested out of range. Not sure if there is something I could test to figure out what this might be and hope it can be cleaned up. Or do I have to run higher FC numbers for an extended period of time? Or did my plaster decide to give up after this winter and absorb a rather intense algae bloom? Plaster is about 8-10 years old.
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers
