As I was doing a backwash on my Sta-Rite DE filter yesterday, I was reading the backwash instructions on the filter and they said to rotate the valve to backwash for 1 minute then to rotate the valve to filter for 20 seconds and repeat the procedure 3 times. I have always rotated to rinse following each backwash. Which is the proper method?

The problem with their procedure is whoever wrote it tried to cover the operation of both a MPV and Slide Valve in one procedure.
They are very different and a Slide Valve does not have a RINSE setting, only BACK WASH and FILTER.
So they ignored what an MPV can do and said return the valve to FILTER.
I would continue to use RINSE instead of FILTER.

FILTER returns the dirty backwash water to the pool.
RINSE returns the dirty backwash water to waste.
I would rather send that water to waste.

Well it looks like I have been doing the right thing. It didn't make sense to me to send the rinse back to the pool. It wouldn't have taken a whole lot more words to cover both.
