So I am new, and struggling to understand what specific products are ok to add to my pool and their cost.

I have found a few different threads on specific brands of eg muriatic acid, their percentages, where you can get them, and how much they are.

It would be really great if there was a pinned thread for each ingredient, that I could just run through to get the latest products users have used.

Specifically, I have been trying to pin down which products I can use to raise the calcium hardness, and the article

has this advice:

"They are available in some areas as Peladow, Dowflake, Tetra Flake, or Tetra 94, often sold as a deicer by hardware stores, and some big box stores, in colder climates. Pool stores will carry either calcium chloride or calcium chloride dihydrate under a variety of names,"

But I'd love some clarity on exactly which form of those brands is ok to add--it seems to me that each of these brands has products that have a mix of calcium chloride and ??? other stuff in them. Would be great to get some clarity on specifically which product is truly ok to add, and what is in them. I think noting what is in them is important because it seems obvious now that brands will CHANGE the products with the same name, which means just listing a specific product name is not good enough for someone coming back in a year or two or more.

So anyways, would love to know specifically which products currently provide close-to-100% calcium chloride, and which other ingredients are in those products and what the thresholds are above which I wouldn't want to use that product. Maybe this is too hard to maintain for the list managers, but feels like a pinned thread where users can post their most recent product with details would be incredibly helpful!

Thank you!!!

Peladow, Dowflake, Tetra Flake, or Tetra 94
These are now brands, they are specific products.

Go to your local pool store and they will have a perfectly find product. You can confirm on the label as being calcium chloride or calcium chloride dihydrate. I have not seen a pool store carry another form of calcium. You will be just fine.

I appreciate your confidence in my local pool store, haha. I like them, but they -did- recommend I use trichlor pucks instead of liquid chlorine, which has driven my CYA above 100. I am lucky I found this site JUST in time to stop my pool from becoming another object lesson...

That said, they did have some more-or-less legit looking calcium chloride, which I used and am happy with.

I'm going to replace about half my pool water in the next month, to bring my CYA down to managable levels, just waiting until I have some time.

Thank you for your response, I am trying to find a happy medium between trusting my local guys and not getting into trouble because they inexplicably will sell stuff that will harm the chemical balance.
