Spa floor rebar concern

Dec 10, 2013

We have just started our pool construction. Yesterday was gunite day. Before shooting gunite, we realized the spa was deeper than we wanted it to be. The gunite crew said they could fix it.
They cut rebar on the spa floor to move up the spa drains.
The wall rebar was not touched. They only cut the floor rebar pieces to move up drains. So, the rebar cage that goes around the walls is tied together.
The floor has the rebar piece split in half—one part at the bottom and the other at the top—and it probably has about 7 to 8" inches of gunite. They put some rebar pieces at the top of the drains, but I wonder if they will help or do much.
Should I be worried that this fix will cause problems with the spa's structure in the future? Again, the floor has a lot of gunite and rebar but isn't tied together.
Please share your experience & thoughts!

It is done and buried. If you were told you should worry about it what would you do?

Your Profile has no location. Location and soil conditions make a difference in rebar and structural requirements for a pool.

Do you have engineering plans for the pool with an engineer’s stamp on it?

Thank you for your replies. I'm in Houston. No engineering plans. Here is a picture of how it was before gunite. I marked the areas they cut to move the drains up.
I know it is done and buried, but I want to know if this should be a big concern and if it would be better to stop construction and discuss a possible solution with the PB.
As I mentioned in my previous post, the rebar is still there, and there is more gunite than 6" on the floor.

You showed us where the rebar was cut but without seeing the way the pieces were connected back together we can't comment.

If the PB is not aware of what the gunite crew did then you should talk with him.

Although the PB will likely say it will be fine and then hopefully deal with it if cracks show up within your warranty period.

The Texas area between Houston and Austin has areas of expansive or unstable soil and we see many reports of pools cracking. Some builders handle it well and some don't.
