My spa is draining into my pool, but I can’t figure out how or why.

The spa main drain is closed, the spa return valves are closed. It should be isolated.

For giggles, I’ve also closed the skimmer suction and cleaner valves as well.

What am I missing?

Get a bunch of winterizing plugs and plug the spa jets and drains. Then remove one plug at a time and see when the spa leaks down. That narrows which pipe and valve you need to examine more closely.

Same here with a failed check valve. I rebuilt the valve and it stopped leaking, but then 1 year later it was leaking again. This time I just took it apart and cleaned everything and lightly Magic Lubed the seal. So far so good and it's been leak free for 6-8 months.

Some updates... the spa was not draining into the pool. The builder had messed with my auto fill and the auto fill was filling the pool. The spa was draining... just not into the pool.

It's something to do with the spa jets... when i turn those on, water streams out of the side of the spa. Warranty claim incoming.

I've done some process of elimination here

  • When full, there are no visible leaks into the pool from above the water line. Everything is bone dry.
  • When the spa is empty, water does not flow in from the pool - spa stays dry. This tells me it's not a structural issue between the pool an the spa
  • Spa drains down to just below the jets, and then stops and holds - this tells me its not the drain, the returns, the check valves or a crack leaking water beneath the jets
Whatever it is, its above the spa jets. And with the spa jets spewing water out of the side of the spa when turned on, they're almost certainly cracked or damaged - so that seems to be a likely culprit.

Will keep everyone updated. Leak detection coming back tomorrow.
