So the other day I was idly wondering why sodium hypochlorite comes as a liquid and isn't available as a solid like calcium or lithium hypochlorite are. I pulled up the Wikipedia page on sodium hypochlorite, and:
The anhydrous compound is unstable and may decompose explosively.[2][3] It can be crystallized as a pentahydrate NaOCl·5H2O, a pale greenish-yellow solid which is not explosive and is stable if kept refrigerated.
Ah, okay, that explains it. Either it explodes or requires refrigeration for storage, neither of which is desirable for pool usage. Unfortunate as well, as powdered sodium hypochlorite would be amazing for pool usage if it wasn't so unstable.

I 'idly wonder' what the dog is thinking, or how many more days I can go before the grass needs cutting, but you do you. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::LOL:

Seriously tho, thanks for wondering and sharing so I'll never wonder myself. Back to the puppy. Pretty sure he wants my lunch. The world will never know I guess.

Lithium hypochlorite is a great source of chlorine and no issues with scaling whatsoever .... if you don’t mind paying 5X the price of cal-hypo for it 🤑🤑🤑

Is it even available anymore? I did some searching and found a blog post from In The Swim from 2018 with said it had been discontinued as the prices had risen too high due to the ever growing demand for lithium for batteries.

I've been idly wondering if I could setup some sort of distillation system to get calcium out of my pool water.
Well, you could, but it would be so very, very expensive! In areas where water is restricted or expensive, people use RO to reduce calcium in their pools. That is better, but in many places, still more expensive than just dumping and refilling water.
