Solar Cover Fit

I have an oval pool and a rectangular solar cover. Should I trim it down to fit within the walls of the pool or is it ok to lay the corners on the pool deck and hold down with a brick? My guess is it will work better lying flat on the water, but just thought I would throw it out to the experts.

Trim to fit. It will keep heat in better and then won't get blown around by the wind, without using brick/weights.
