Sodium levels in my pool

Taylor K-1766 Salt Test Kit instructions

PROCEDURE: CAREFULLY READ AND FOLLOW PRECAUTIONS ON REAGENT LABELS. KEEP REAGENTS AWAY FROM CHILDREN. For 1 drop = 200 ppm Sodium Chloride.

  1. Rinse and fill the plain graduated cylinder to 10 mL mark with water to be tested.
  2. Add 1 drop R-0630 Chromate Indicator. Swirl to mix. Sample should turn yellow.
  3. Add R-0718 Silver Nitrate Reagent dropwise, swirling and counting after each drop, until color changes from yellow to a milky salmon (brick) red. Always hold bottle in vertical position. NOTE: Do not add enough R-0718 Silver Nitrate Reagent to give a brown color. First change from yellow to a milky salmon (brick) red is the endpoint.
  4. Multiply drops of R-0718 Silver Nitrate Reagent by 200. Record as parts per million (ppm) salt as sodium chloride (salt water).

K-1766 Testing Errors

If the K-1766 sample is staying milky and not turning maroon when expected check you are using a 10ml sample and not 25ml.

Add your heater to your signature - and any other pool equipment not presently listed.

A 10 year old water softener probably needs the resin beads replaced. It may also need some seals or the piston replaced.

Changing the regen from 7 days to 14 days isn't necessarily a good thing. If the softener capacity is exceeded before the number of days, you will be getting calcium rich water into the house plumbing and pool.

Where in AZ are you?
What is the capacity of the softener?
Does the softener only regen on a number of days schedule or can it regen after a certain number of gallons?

None of your tests indicate a problem, so why are you spending so much time worrying about it? Most people never test for salt.
His concern is valid if his fill water contains high salt levels. He will see his salt levels continue to rise with evaporative top offs if he doesn't rectify the problem.

Ok. I have tested the city water multiple times now all coming back at 1800ppm. 10ml mark. My softener is giving me 2000ppm. Originally the softener was set to 14 days I changed it to 7 before the pool was built. Wife likes really soft water. I put it back thinking it would help but seeing that city water is 1800ppm I need to figure out who I contact in the city to fix the issue. I live in the west valley. Far west.

After further investigation my salinity levels from the city I tested are correct. The city gets their water from underground which has a high salinity level. I guess I will just have to drain my pool yearly.
