I would think since lower CYA would mean you would need lower TC, so you would not need to run the SWG for as long? I am OF COURSE following the guidelines set forth here, but can someone help me out with the “why” of it? I understand the correlation between CYA and chlorine, I just don’t understand the higher recommendation with the SWG.

Chlorine/CYA Chart

The higher CYA is to protect the FC. If you were to run the FC as in a non-SWCG pool, at much higher levels, such that you never went below the non-SWCG minimums, then you can run a lower CYA. But you would need a very oversized SWCG to out run the FC loss during the day due to UV degradation of the chlorine in the pool.

The chart is a recommendation. If you can manage your pool and still meet the minimum FC to prevent algae, that is up to you.

Ok, I understand the higher the cya the more FC you need. But wouldn’t lower CYA mean you need less FC which in turn means you run the SWG for less time? So let’s say I have 60 CYA and I run my SWG for 6 hours to keep a 6 FC. If I had a 40 CYA then I would need less FC which means I could run my SWG for less time? What am I missing?

Your theory works if the SWCG added chlorine like what happens when you add it from a bottle. But it doesn't. It adds it in very small amounts over a long time. So if your CYA is low, the sun will be burning off your CYA faster than your SWCG can make it. So by keeping your CYA higher, you can lessen the FC loss to the sun.

Do you know what FC your SWCG generates per hour in your size pool? Get that information and that will help you understand how slowly the SWCG creates chlorine.

Agreed with Marty above. I'm on year 7 with a SWG and have found life easier at higher CYA levels. Your SWG adds chlorine ever so slowly so the added CYA does a lot to protect that chlorine during the high sunny hours of afternoon. With lower CYA, the sun may be burning off your chlorine almost as fast as the SWG can produce it.

Hope that helps with perspective.

Marty, thank you. I understand now. I didn’t consider the slow addition of chlorine. I am at 60CYA right now but I planned on raising to 80 since it’s rainy season and I lose a lot of pool water to overflow. I haven’t figured my SWG FC generation since I’m still adjusting it. I had the bleach additions down, just have a learning curve with the SWG. It must be irritating as a mod to have to answer the same questions over and over.

I would reallt like to use the SWG Run Time Calculator to dial in my SWG but can not seem to get it to downloaded in a usesble form from the link you posted. When i tried to open it after downliafed it requires me to open in Dropbox and the version that comes up can not be used. Is there another site or link to get it from?

Hmm. I just downloaded the file from the thread just now to check.

Yes it opens in Dropbox. But you Direct Download and decline the offer to open an account and save it to your computer.

I do not know of any where else to get it from.
