Basically, it is increasing the FC level of the water to eradicate algae. The key part is to maintain that high FC level for an extended period of time to fully kill all algae.
Then brush, vacuum and clean filter to remove the dead algae from the pool system.
 
It depends on several factors, including how bad the algae outbreak is and your ability to maintain FC at slam level. The size of the pool the type of pool and the ability of your filter to remove dead algae all contribute. You're looking at anywhere from two days to weeks.
