Slam - The last thing I needed right now

First up its my own fault for ignoring the pool

For the past three weeks I have done nothing but be in and out of hospital after my partner had sudden renal failure. Needless to say I have not even looked at my pool

He was discharged two days ago, still very ill, while we wait on more test results. The next tests are due in 2-3 weeks and then more test results in 4-6 weeks (these had to go to aussie!!!)

So thinking that the weather is finally warming up and a dip in the pool would be nice I pulled the cover back to a nice shade of lime green covering the walls and floor of the pool :brickwall:

So after reading thousands of slam posts and helping those where I could, I guess its now my turn. I regret not buying a SWG while they were on sale at the beginning of the season
At least I have plenty of bleach

Its been so long since I have done any testing or dosing of the pool I have no idea where I currently sit

Knowing FC would be 0 as no chlorine added in three weeks I put in 12ppm and now off to brush the pool and run a full set of tests

NO!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

SO sorry to hear of your SO's health problems! Of course they take precedence over the pool!

Now let me ask you this...........your pool is only 6000 gals and your have better things to do than SLAM your pool. Would it be better to drain and refill? I have NO idea how much your water costs so..............there is that to think about.

Just so others will know what I am talking about when they read this thread here is the link to the SLAM:

Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain

 and many healing thoughts to you and yours

Kim (no cheering for this one)

Oh man..Caco...sorry to hear about your partner...hope all gets better for your guys soon.

With the amount of time you helped me, if there is anything you need researched because your dont have time or anything you want help with that I can do here, please let me know.

Thanks Kim and Buba for the kind thoughts, they are much appreciated

Buba, do you happen to know any hematologists? The doctors here are really confused so are basically testing for anything they can think of and we are starting to run out of tests to do.... (jk, kinda)

Kim, I thought about a water change as well, as I pay a flat rate for water throughout the year, so a water change would essentially be free. However I have today and tomorrow I can focus on the pool, and it is small so it doesn't take long to brush etc so I think I will just slam. Thankfully after brushing the water only looks really murky, not green, so fingers crossed for a quick slam

Ok, so I went out and back washed the filter as pressure was a little high. Brushed the entire pool. Removed a total of 4 leaves and 2 cicada's. Test results are as follows:

FC 12
CC 1
ph 7.2 (tested prior to adding chlorine)
TA 75
CH 250
CYA 0 (OMG really??? I raised this to 50ppm in December)
Salt 3500
Borates 50

So should I add 30ppm CYA or wait a while and see if I have a CC spike?

Going to order a backup FC test, as mine is about half gone

Tested at 5.00pm 12 FC, no chlorine added

Lots of grey dead algae, brushed floor again to help filter them out
May look to vacuum later tonight when it is cooler outside

Hi Duraleigh, Yeah I figured the water change would not advance me much in the process and to be honest was too tired to even look for the pump to empty the pool.

So sorry to hear, Caco. :( Last thing you need, that's for sure.

Great that you have the tools and know the methods that make it the least total work, but that ain't much comfort! Looks like you're making good progress so far :)

Good morning all
10.30 am test
FC 15
CC 1
No chlorine added. Removed cover
Water temp fallen from 31 to 24°C (88 to 75°F). Gonna be cool and cloudy all day :(

Planning to vacuum and brush after I finish the lawns, lots of grey sediment on the bottom.
Water looks much better :)

Now wishing I had tested post add last night to check where my FC got to, no loss overnight would be unusual!! Must've been a bit heavy handed with the FC

1.30 test
FC 13
CC not tested
Vacuumed pool
Filter PSI rose from 5 to 8. Back washed and back at 5psi
Left vacuum in pool and will give it another vacuum this avo after dust has settled from first vacuum

Hey Kim, by other things I assume you mean my partner? No, he is in pain and sleeps pretty much all day. The fatigue is draining, he had a shower yesterday and that was enough to exhaust him. I am struggling to keep his fluids up and I think he may be going downhill, may have to take him back to the hospital for a few days if it gets any worse today

All we know at this stage is that the kidney failure, followed by spleen and liver function reduction was caused by high calcium levels, brought on by high vitamin D levels, in turn likely triggered by high PTHrp hormone levels. This would normally indicate a large solid tumour of some sort, however 3x cat scans and 4x mri's have failed to find any such tumour. So we are waiting on a N-terminal PTH-RP test to see if that is elevated as well (C-terminal is elevated). Also have tests outstanding for Lupus and other misc inflammatory diseases, a whole host of immunodeficiency diseases as well as looking for other possible cancers, as well as virus and bacteria infections.

At the moment he is on biphosphanates to bring down his calcium levels, they are currently double what they should be, but way down on what they were. They have only allowed paracetamol for pain relief as worried his body wont tolerate anything stronger. He is supposed to drink 4-6 litres of water a day, but its a struggle to get to 4. Also on a low calcium diet. Unfortunately he is too ill to take a best guess and start a treatment. So we hope to keep him stable and fingers crossed on finding something soon

What I am impressed about is that this is so far out of my field of expertise (I'm a civil engineer) and yet I have done enough research to understand the doctors and ask intelligent questions. Maybe I aint as dumb as I thought ;)

That is what I meant but wanted to leave it open in case you did not want to talk about it. Man what a journey he and you have been on. How scary it has to be. Good for you for learning all you can. It is VERY important that you learn as much as you can. Doctors are humans first. They do not know everything and sometimes get stuck in a rut and in so doing don't see things outside the box.

I almost lost mine from a simple procedure :( If I had not been there with him he would have died. He started bleeding out and none of the nurses had checked on him in a while and the covers hid the blood. He is fine now but getting here was not fun at the time.

Yeah the last thing you needed was a green pool  at least you know how to clear it. Are you taking time off of work during this hard time?

 and hope he is able to stay out of the hospital.

It has been a journey. He has never fully recovered from being hit by a truck 4 years ago, got hit by MRSA from one of those surgery's and now this. Beginning to wonder what I did to someone in a former life....

He has good doctors on his case now, 4 specialists and 3x junior doctors working on his case. The lead specialist is good, not pre-determining anything and testing everything he can think of. Its funny when I say something like, "I was reading this case study a few days ago and it suggested...", and he is like "oh I read that one too and ordered X tests because of it" lol.

Its only cause I threw a stink in the emergency about a month ago when he collapsed that we got this far. The junior doc diagnosed heat stroke and wanted to discharge him after a few litres of fluids based on dehydration and mental fogginess. I was so not happy and started a scene and INSISTED on discussing with the senior doctor in charge. The senior doctor talked it over with me, initially he was not happy to do so and agreed with the diagnosis of the junior doc. I kept saying is couldn't be heat stroke, he had been asleep on and off for 16 hrs, in a cool room and drunk about 6 litres of water. After 10-15 mins or so I saw a change in the senior doctors attitude, who said my partner would stay overnight and they would do some more tests. I waited a few hours for the first of the tests and they said kidney failure.

The only reason they tested his kidneys is the senior doc was a kidney specialist, who was rostered to the ER while he waited on hand surgery for himself. Someone was looking out for us that night I feel.

You and he are so lucky that you were there to check up on him. I guess much like here the nurses always seem so busy and taking care of so many people its hard for them to keep up at times. Glad that is all in the past now and I assume he is fully recovered.

Work has been great. I have gone through my 10 days of sick leave, but applied and got granted another 10 from my works 'sick bank'. I have been told if I need more that should not be a problem. All our staff get 10 days sick leave a year, which you cant carry over to the next year. If you have extra you can donate it to the 'sick bank' for other people to apply for extra paid leave in circumstances like mine.

I have to start back at work tomorrow :( but I am planning to take Tuesdays and Thursdays off for a while. I am currently lead engineer on 3 projects, the smallest of which is $2.1 million. I have to keep working to ensure the projects keep moving, but a lot of my junior engineers have stepped up to take on more responsibility without being asked which is so neat. I will have to recognise their efforts somehow after things are more normal. Maybe something like beers and fish and chips at the beach for an afternoon

Thanks Christina for the thoughts, they are much appreciated. They bring a little :sunny: to the day
