Posting journey of my first slam following the rules. 2nd season with a home with 25yr old concrete pool. All equipment was origional, this season i changed out most of the equipment. I just got my TF pro kit today and recorded all numbers below. Based on my cya I am shooting for a target of 16FC. I have switched to liquid chlorine 12.5% pink label from Menards for $4.99. I set my filter to recirculation I read somewhere that was fine while high chlorine let me know if I should put that back to filter.

FC:1
PH:7.4
TA:60
CH: 400
CYA:45
Added 3 gallons of shock
1 hour later test FC: 11
Added 1 Gallon
Will test FC in the morning.20230831_141739.jpg

Such a pretty green.....but it has to GO!! Good job getting that test kit, its a great one!

For a CYA of "45" we prefer if you round that up to 50. which makes your SLAM process goal 20ppm FC.

You want to put the filter on to capture dead algae, and when your filter pressure rises 25% over clean pressure go ahead and backwash it.

Keep at it and ask questions as they arise. We are :kim: rooting :kim: for you!

Ok color changed a tad but I thought I would wait to 2pm so I get the same lighting. Interestingly my FC did not drop from midnight. I just measured it at 19 and my last measurement had been at 11. I went ahead and changed the filter to be on filtration after seeing what Yippieskippy said. Since you said I could be having a target of 25 instead of 16 I went ahead and added another gallon to pull the FC higher.

Your target is 20, not 25. You are ok, just try to get to 20 each time you test and dose. If you can test and dose every couple of hours for the long weekend, you are going to see good progress. If not, don’t panic, your SLAM will just take more days. Do try to test and dose, at minimum, 3-4 times daily. Don’t forget progress photos. Sometimes you think it’s dragging, but then in photos you can see just how far you’ve come!

Update:
9/1 7am 19 added 1 gal
9/1 1pm 16
9/1 6pm 14 added 2 gal and 2 lb gradual out of liquid
9/1 10pm 24 left alone
9/2 9am 12! I am going to pick up more liquid chlorine now,
edit, came back with 10 gallons. Added 2 gallons. Backwashed the filter & scrubbed.
1:30pm Clorine 25ppm
Does seem like the shade of color has lightend.
Updated photo to be closer to the same time of day as the others.

You are going to need a lot - I’d grab as much as you can afford and store.

Please don't use granular unless it is CalHypo and even that will add to your calcium level whch is good where it is. If you use Dichlor it just adds yet more CYA and raises the bar for your SLAM process amount fo FC. Thanks :)

Progress update: Color has changed to teal / the spa and 3 foot area by it looks much better as it gets darker is the deep end of about 10 feet. This morning I back washed for the third morning in a row added half gallon to push over 20. Also replaced one skimmer skim a round my other broke and they sent socks I added to both skimmers and a clarifying pill in each that ca.e with. Does my target change at all or continues course of 20 until Blue/pass the slam tests.

Remove the "clarifying" pills.
You don't stop a SLAM when the water turns blue.
Don't add anything not listed in the SLAM Process

Add only enough chlorine to attain SLAM target FC. Not more and not less.
Use PoolMath to help calculate the correct amount of chlorine to add.

Continue to follow the SLAM Process - to the letter, no shortcuts or magic pills/potions - until passing ALL 3 criteria listed in the SLAM Process.
