how long do people keep skimmer socks in?
do you reuse them, and if so, what is your cleaning process between uses?

despite never failing oclt, no visible algae, my pool fills with dead algae every week. im wondering if the skimmer sock is seeding it, because if it gets an algae cell on it, then covered by dead algae, it can never be chlorinated by passing water, right?

should I just ditch them and let the water go into the filter without a sock?

thanks in advance

It depends on time of year. During pollen season its at least once a week.

During summer/fall outside of pollen season ots about once every two weeks

During winter its as needed.

Are you sure its algae and not dust or pollen being blown in the pool?

Unlike those who buy disposable skimmer socks online, I use the 1 Gal paint strainer nets from Home Depot. They do the job and are strong enough that each day I can pull it out, whack it against the fence to clean it, then reinstall. I can use the same product all season long. I never operate the pool without a good skimmer sock product installed. They help a lot.

As for algae, if you have it, the skimmer sock isn't a key factor one way or the other. Algae requires a SLAM Process.

fairly sure its dead algae. and im not keen to slam again. i have no visible algae, my numbers are always in target, my current OCLT is 1, and the only thing that can account for this is the skimmer sock, some dead spots in the pool, or too little filtration time. so I want to isolate 1 by 1 before I waste anymore reagents, chlorine or time
if the sock has a green streak on it when i rinse it, could that not mean its harboring algae?

If it’s dead algae that means you have live algae the chlorine is killing. are you certain no live algae? If so I would lean towards organic material filtering out

well im not certain but i dont want to slam and go back to the same thing. if theres algae i have to change something. so currently im investigating if the skimmer socks are to be implicated or if theyre beyond suspicion...
