I've been debating on getting either of these. My skimmer basket is 9 inches in diameter.

This was produced for the specific purpose for pools.

This was suggested by someone on the forums in a previous thread.

Is one better than the other? Or are they the same essentially?

More importantly... How long do either of them generally last? How often do you replace them?

Switched over to hair nets thanks to a forum member and have never looked back.

I was using the pool specific skimmer socks before. I worry about adding excess waste to the landfill and liked that they were easy to rinse clean and put back in the basket.

Then....Skippy said lets try the hair thingies....

I gave in and we're now using the disposable hairnet things.... wow.... so easy to just pick out and toss away, put another in and move on with my life....

At this point in the summer it only needs changing out maybe once a week? In the spring is my high pollen time and it might be daily then. They collect all the schmutz the yard can throw at it.

I'm assuming you're referring to yourself in this story? lol

how often were you changing the pool specific skimmer socks?

Many here have begun using the disposable hairnets like food worker use.
You can buy 100 for $5 or if you want a "lifetime supply" its 500 for $18 at Amazon. They seem to work very well and at less than 6¢ each a real bargain. If you need something larger for lining a leaf canister there is always ladies knee high nylons. Creativity is the key to affordable pool products.

I've purchased the pool specific ones three times now for battling a really bad pollen issue and questionable sand filter performance.
Performance wise they work great. I haven't tried the hair net. I have chosen to throw the socks away after a few uses each just because I didn't have time to put them in a washing machine. You can rise them in a bucket and even sanitize with a bit of bleach.
Example: I tried putting some DE into my sand filter and it went right into the pool. I tried vacuuming it through the filter and it just went back in pool. I then rigged up a very unattractive alternative return pipe which allows the sock to be used on the return and I feel I collected every spec of the DE without vacuuming to waste.
Very durable, washable. I like them.
Hairnets are a great value as the other person says. They apparently serve a good function.
If you want to capture talc size particles then I know those socks will do it.

Im working on a series of videos to show what I did with my pool recently. Check out this video from about 1:30 until you decide you've seen enough. Pool 14 - YouTube
