It seems like this forum is all about monitoring and adjusting based on testing. Does anyone use the in-line chlorine basket in the return line? I have one but haven't used it before. Something to consider? And if so, what kind of chlorine should I be using?

The inline chlorinator is for trichlor. Trichlor will add chlorine, CYA, and acid to your pool. If your testing allow for those items, then it can be used. But you must be aware that the CYA will continually increase, thus requiring more chlorine to be added, which adds more CYA, which -- well -- you get the picture.
I assume you are using liquid chlorine. Stay with that. If you leave the pool for a week or whatever then put some trichlor in the chlorinator. Test when you get home and adjust your parameters as necessary.

Yes, we're about the things you mentioned plus our methodology. Our methods control CYA and FC separately since the CYA persists and FC does not. With trichlor tablets being about equal amount of CYA and FC you will inevitably have to deal with high CYA if you used trichlor tablets regularly. As Marty mentioned many of our liquid chlorine members use tablets to deal with travel time. I did this myself over 5 years and it worked great. Just needed to manage my CYA level in the low end of the range before my travel to accommodate the CYA build up. If you decide to use the in-line chlorinator It takes a little "trial and error" on the control to figure out what works best for your installation so I'd do more testing 'till you get the hang of it. After the first couple of years and going through a hurricane I actually preferred to use the cheap floating dispensers that I had to get for power outages. If power failure happens and it takes the pump offline you don't get any chlorine added. Once I had the floating dispensers I just used them for vacations also since I had the additional protection. Eventually I removed the in line chlorinator to make room for my SWG cell.
