Should I add stabilizer?

pool perfect all season thanks to TFP!!
Cya less than 30 could be zero. Who knows
Pool not in sun all day so only had to add 10 to 20
ounces 12.5% liquid chlorine each day to keep FC around 5 over the summer. So really haven't thought about adding
Stabalizer. Didn't want to mess with perfection. pH has been steady at 7.2. And TA at a steady 80
Now that summer is at an end here in NY closing time isn't far off.

Bought natural chemistry pool conditioner. (Liguid stabalizer)
Should I work on getting CYA to 30 before closing? Or wait till next spring? Thanks

There is no need for stabilizer in a closed/covered pool. You should have added it in the summer to help protect the FC from the sun.

Only adding 10-20oz a day seems crazy low to me. That is only 0.8 - 1.6ppm of FC ... most pools need more than that every day, but you just must not have much sun and organics in the water.

No organics. Pool kept squeaky clean. My only concern about not adding CYA
before closing is I will bring up to shock level at closing and the chlorine will be high for quite some time. Last year when I opened FC was still at 4. Does the CYA in the water protect the pool liner?

Sounds like your pool only needs minimal CYA. CYA does nothing for liner protection. It buffers chlorine and protects it from loss from the Sun's UV. I would simply suggest you add enough CYA to maintain 30ppm. That's the lowest readable level on the test and it will offer good buffering of the FC. One important reason to use CYA is that it moderates the levels of hypochlorous acid in the water which tends to favor the formation of monochloramine over the formation of nitrogen trichloride. Nitrogen trichloride is a really nasty CC that has a very low odor threshold and is harmful at high levels. It is the chemical compound that gives indoor/commercial/public pool water that "gross chlorine smell".

This helps me greatly too. We are about to install a new liner and of course fill our above ground pool tomorrow. They offered to cover it for the winter for free. Who can turn that down? But I was concerned about no CYA in the water. I will just wait til spring, and save my pennies, cause that stuff is $$!

CYA?? Should be about $4 per pound or so at Walmart or Home Depot. May be able to get it cheaper on line.

Only use the dry CYA. The liquid is quite expensive.

I would suggest you follow TFPs closing procedure on this fresh fill or else you'll have a green mess on your hands come spring time. You can't just fill a pool and cover it up, the water needs to be properly sanitized and treated for the winter.
