Shocking pool before vacation

SLAM is short for slam level and maintain. Since we don't teach "shocking" the pool we refer to the hyper-chlorination process as SLAM. In pool industry terms "shocking" the pool is raising the chlorine higher than normal, usually using granular chlorine labeled as pool shock. In TFP terminology slamming the pool is raising the chlorine level to a specific value based on your CYA level, and keeping it at that level until the pool is clear.
When people have to be away from their pools for a week or so we recommend raising the chlorine to the pool's slam level (chlorine target level for a slam) the evening before you leave, and covering the pool to minimize chlorine loss while away. The goal is to have enough residual chlorine for the pool to be clear when you arrive home. Most pools will go green if not given chlorine in over a week.
