Last year I closed pool end of September when temperatures was in 60s day - 50s night. I’m going in for knee replacement September 11 with temperatures in the 70s here - NY Long Island - what should I do ? Shock pool on the 7th and put in poly algaecide 60 on the 9th. I don’t know what else to do. When opening it will be green. Just shock it again and run pump 24-7

Marty, best of luck with your new knee(s). Enjoy the PT workouts.

Raise your FC to SLAM level then add Polyquat 60 and close the pool. It may or may not need the SLAM Process next spring. Not a big problem if it does.

Last season I slam it and ran pump 24 hours then added poly 60. Reading here and someone said to wait and run pump for 3 days before adding poly 60. I did some reading about that. You need slam levels to drop for the poly 60 to work. Why is that ????

Just to put this out there. My son just moved into a house in jersey and keep the same pool service. He doesn’t have time to use it so I told him to call and close it. I was there and watched the pool service guys close pool. They dropped water lever - blow out pipes and put cover on it. They didn’t add anything!!!!!!’nnn. So I ask why ? They said it’s going to be green anyway so why add. But what got me ****** is they didn’t pull the Pentair two filters out and clean them. I just put them in new 2 weeks ago. $400 buck !!! I went off on them. My son got a call that day from the owner. Asked who was the old man that fired my workers.

Chlorine oxidizes the Polyquat and breaks it down. You want the Polyquat 60 to last in the water and keep it algae free until it gets cold.

Let your FC return towards normal.

See..

Ajw. I think we spoke about my sons pool ?? You live close to Wyckoff? Next year when he opens pool he needs a different pool service guy. Maybe we can talk ?? My sons pool the SWG is not working and needs 2 new motors. I replaced one already for the vacuum system.

With Pool Company who closes my pool you have to request and pay extra for the winter chemical package, which is Polyquat, or filter cleaning. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Happy to talk. I think I PMd you the name of my pool company.

Hey Marty just a thought. Consider covering your pool and leave it running while you go through the wosrt of the recovery. Being covered would need very little if any chlorine added. You could go well into November and possible December here before worrying about freezing. By then you'd be ok enough to finish the rest of it. Or if you were having a slow recovery you could finish it with help like your son.

I don’t do this but !!!! I now seen two pool service Winterizers the pool the same way. They don’t put anything in the pool water. Nothing!!! When I asked- there answer is - why wast money. We will shock it in the spring knowing it’s going to be green anyway. Yep- that’s how they think. PS - they still charge you as if they were putting chemicals in for the fall closed.
