Sand filter w/ iron in water?

We have a 16' intex that want to upgrade the pump and filter on this year. The problem is we use well water and so when I fill it I have to add mineral out and continuosly clean the cartridge filter every couple of hours for 2 days that the pump is running untill it's clear. My question is can I ever use a sand filter? Would I have to refill the sand after all the irons out? Should I just stick with a cartridge and if so what do y'all reccomend? Thanks everyone.

As much as I love my sand filter this is the one time I would stay with the cartridge. You will lose a lot of water every time you have to backwash the filter and I think it will take longer to clear the water in your case. I also worry that over a short time you will end up having to change the sand out to get rid of all of the "bad" stuff :(

As for what filter to go with........I would go as big as you wallet can hold. The bigger it is the less you have to clean it............here is one example:

I did not price shop. I just looked for a 100 sq ft filter.

We too are on a well with high Iron and I too would avoid sand. We’ve had good success however with a DE filter as we tear it apart at each cleaning rather than backflushing. Key to remember regardless is to use fresh metal free water whenever possible and avoid as much water waste as you can.

Thanks Kim, Im pretty good at finding a good deal lol. so what size do you reccomend 100sq ft or 150, 200? And I'm assuming that since it's not intex brand it will have to be adapted to fit?

I love the option of not using well water lol, but unfortunately it's free since the well runs off my mother in laws electric and not mine. If I tried to tell my husband I wanted to pay for water he'd probably die laughing . I think I pretty well have a system for getting the iron out, and once it was out last year I never had anymore problens.

The largest option for free water is rainwater for topoff. Direct downspouts into the pool if at all possible to help topoff the water during the summer. Granted you’ll likely get some stones in the water but that’s a lot easier to clean than iron

Poly fill only works to catch iron after it has been oxidized and precipitated. Once the iron is precipitated it is much more likely to start staining things.

Its best to avoid adding fill water with high iron if you can or at the very least take steps to limit the amount of fill water you need.

I don't know the size of your wallet. I would no smaller that 100 but if you wallet can handle go bigger. The bigger it is the less often you will have to clean it!

Yeah you will spend some time at the hardware store trying to go from that to this. I am guessing it will be a 2 six-pack and three trip job!
