Is it normal for a sand filter to expand upward when you turn it on? It shrinks down when I shut the system off. I never noticed this before today. It happened after I backwashed the filter.

Be very careful. Sounds like you're building up pressure and can be deadly. Tell us more about what you turned off.
I flipped the switch where my timer is to shut the entire system off to backwash my filter. When I turned the system back on is when I noticed the filter stretch upwards, kind of like it grew. Then when I shut it off for the day it shrunk back down.

As it's been asked before, what is the filter pressure while on and does the needle sit on the pin when it off just to be sure the gauge is reading correctly.

All filters expand when pressurized, but it depends on how much.

What is the pressure going to on startup?
Pressure sits at 20 psi when on high, which is what the pressure was at startup. when I put the speed on low it sits at 3 psi. I don’t have a video and it’s dark out now. I will take a video tomorrow

Does the filter gauge rest at zero when pump is off, was the question to be sure it’s not defective.
There's no reason to backwash the filter weekly unless the filter pressure rises 25% above clean filter pressure.

All filters expand when the pressure increases.

Ideally, the pressure on a filter should never be higher than 15 psi and I would want less than 10 psi whenever possible.

You never need high speed unless you have a heater or some other reason.

For simple filtration, I would never use high speed and only use low speed.

What is the filter make and model?
