Sand filter hardened

How about using muriatic acid to unclog the sand?

If you don't know what the "stuff" in the filter is, that could prove to be dangerous.

If you cannot disturb that sand enough to deep clean, how are you going to remove it to replace without cutting the tank open? Large hammer on the end of the stick?

I think i should be using a small hammer drill to break the sand!

May only have to loosen the top "crust" to be able to use a good water nozzle to break up the sand. Hammer drill, just stay away from the side of the tank.
