Sand escaping filter during initial setup/backwash

Hi all,

I am setting up a new Intex SX1500 pump/filter combo to replace the standard filter on a new 12' diameter, 2,400 gallon above ground pool. After diligently following the manufacturer's instructions to set up the pump and connecting all hoses, I bled the air out and started the backwash/rinse procedure. Started doing 1min backwash, then 1 min rinse. Went through this cycle 10 times already, but I'm still seeing very fine sand in the discharge. Pool has now lost about 4 inches of water.

To head these ideas off, I purchased #20 silica sand from a local pool store, sealed the center pipe before adding sand, and filled the filter tank halfway with water before filling with sand. I finally opened the filter up and there is a thin layer of very fine sand on top of the sand in the filter tank (PHOTOS ATTACHED). The center pipe is clear and does not appear to have any sand inside it. Looks like poorly graded sand to me?

My question now is...should I continue the backwash/rinse cycles and try to remove the remaining fine sand on top? Or...do I need to drain and remove all the media and start over with #20 sand from a different source? This forum has been helpful to me so far and any insights would be greatly appreciated (I haven't seen another post with my exact combination of equipment and symptoms). Thanks!
