Hi, I just bought a Saltron Mini and the manual says to shock the water with chlorine shock.

I cannot find chlorine shock for spa, but found salt water chlorine shock for swimming pool. Can I use that on freshly filled spa? It says that the free chlorine should be around 3ppm and to reach it with the shock treatment if I understand correctly.

Can I just put chlorine tabs in the float distributor and wait until it reach 3ppm instead of using the chlorine shock?

Or is using a chlorine shock for pool is the best way to reach the initial level of chlorine before starting using the mini ?

I would suggest Liquid Chlorine and some CYA instead, as you can measure each individually. Do you have a test kit? Have you added salt yet (or tested the current salt level left in the water from previous chemicals)?

Do not have the salt device turned *on* when adding salt. Just turn it on next day. Until then use the liquid chlorine. A little CYA (per pool math) to take you up to 30ppm of CYA should be enough. Then the next day turn the salt device on.

Hi Maddie,

My spa always has its cover and is under a balcony, so never in the sun. Solax the manufacturer of the Saltron mini says that CYA is not necessary if the spa is covered or used indoors. Do I still need to add CYA in my situation? The Saltron mini has not been installed yet and the spa will be cleaned and refilled with fresh water.

You’re looking for 99% dichlor.
(sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dihydrate) this adds fc, cya, & is acidic
Use
PoolMath to calculate amounts.
As Maddie mentioned you need some cya to buffer the harshness of adequate fc levels regardless of sun exposure.
Up to 30ppm is fine then switch to liquid chlorine & the swg for sanitation.
The product you mentioned (non chlorine shock) is likely MPS & has no sanitizing properties it is only an oxidizer.

Most here use the swg mainly for their standby chlorination. There will likely still be a need to manually chlorinate with either dichlor or liquid chlorine to compensate for higher bather loads. The main premise is that you must be sure to add enough fc (from whatever source) to ensure you never fall below minimum for your cya at any time
FC/CYA Levels lest nasties will grow.

Btw- don’t use trichlor tablets in a spa, they erode too quickly in the hot water leading to acidic & high fc conditions which is bad for your surfaces & equipment.
