Is there anything to consider with respect to a filter pump when converting to salt water? I understand I need to keep the water balanced but is there something the salt water can do that will damage a pump or other equipment?

Thanks,

All chlorine pools contain salt, added from chlorine, muriatic acid, & body sweat. As mentioned, all pool equipment in contact with the water is designed for water with salt in it.

I also agree with Mark's assessment of a bad start capacitor and would be the first thing I would troubleshoot.
