Salt Purchase

Hi All --
Bought a house with a pool last summer and had the pool company continue to maintain as we figured things out in 2017. I am transitioning to self maintenance based on the method taught on this website for 2018. I am adding an SWG this spring before opening, and am currently in the process of identifying the chemicals I will need to procure.

For the salt, it looks like Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals is recommended (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Diamond-Crystal-Solar-Naturals-Water-Softener-Salt-Crystals-100012454/100172669) here. The home depot website says that the salt is 99.6% pure. The manual for the SWG I am having installed, however, says I should use salt that is 99.8% pure.

Should I be worried about the 0.2% difference in purity with the Diamond Crystal salt vs. the manufacturers recommendation? Is this just a way for the manufacturer to get people to purchase even more expensive salt from a pool store?

Pool is a ~30k gallon inground plaster pool with Hayward DE filter. SWG will be a Jandy TruClear.

Welcome to the forum --

I use water softener salt. Just be sure it does not have any additives for iron sequester, etc. Typically in a blue bag. Home Depot, Walmart, etc.

Shy away from Clorox branded salts. They continue to have issues with iron staining.

Be sure you let your pool circulate for at least 24 hours with the salt in it before powering on your SWCG.

Can you add a signature? See Pool School - Read This BEFORE You Post

Take care.

Nic,

Welcome to TFP... a great place to find the answers to all your "Purity" questions.... :shark:

The number one rule for adding a salt cell is to make sure it is rated for at least 2 x the volume of your pool... So for a 30K pool you really need a cell this is rated at 60K..

The TruClear says it is rated for 40K, but that is really stretching the truth. The cell only outputs .92 lbs. of chlorine a day, while most 40K cells outputs are in the 1.4 lbs. per day range.

Most pools use 2 to 4 ppm of chlorine per day... So using an average use of only 3 ppm, the TruClear will have to be run at 100% output for 20 hours a day just to maintain your chlorine level...

Obviously this means that your pump must also be run for those 20 hours a day... Ouch!!!

I suggest you look at bigger salt cells...

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.
