Salt concentration

Good afternoon,
My pool service company indicated they found 1000 parts per million (PPM) of salt in our pool. The pool is chlorinated not a saltwater system. Is it a problem? Seems to me that's well below the level to make any difference. I realize salt does not evaporate but over time, seems like backflushing, hydro vacuuming and tropical storms deluging the pool should certainly remove the salt. Pool is a 38,000 gallon, in-ground Gunite. Your assistance is appreciated.

buongiorno! The salt in your pool is a residual byproduct of the many chemicals you have added to the pool. Particularly chlorine pucks or granules.
Many pool owners are surprised when they go from using pucks to a salt system that they already have a bit of salt in the pool. Most salt systems require around 3,000ppm salt, so they don't have to add as much as they thought.
For you, that level is inconsequential and won't effect anything.
Salt does remain with evaporation. Calcium and your stabilizer do also.

Welcome to Trouble Free Pools!

I thank you @YippeeSkippy and @PoolGate for your responses!
We have a pool service only because we travel to see the kids. They told us our pool must have been a saltwater pool at some time and the reason we get white silt (lots and lots of silt) is because our pool was a saltwater pool in the past and there is a high salt content at 1 PPM. The silt looks like white sand all over the bottom of the pool. If this was ever a saltwater pool, it was back with the previous owner before Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Edit: I forgot to mention that the pool was resurfaced 8 years ago. Don't they have to empty to pool to do that? :) I think my pool service is incompetent. Thanks so much for your assistance. What a great site. Grazij!!

your pool service is mistaken. It’s not all that uncommon mistake. In fact, salt water pool are also chlorinated just like chlorine pools. The electronics just temporarily convert split the NaCl into sodium and chloride/chlorine which then does the sanitation, then it recombines back into salt (NaCl). The salt water is very low concentration compared to actual sea water.

The system makes taking care of the pool sanitation much easier than traditional chlorine. Makes it easy to go on vacation. 😉

Incidentally, this also means all chlorine pools are basically salt water pools, from a chemistry perspective at least.

Honestly I highly recommend you get another service or better yet take over maintenance yourself based on that answer. 1 part per thousand is almost nothing most pools would have this amount or more unless newly filled. The silt has nothing at all to do with the salt content and another reason to dump them.

Most pools after about a year of running salt level is 1-2 ppt

Saltwater pool salt level is 3-4 ppt

Ocean 35 ppt

I just discussed this with the household 'Commander-in-chief', and she agrees with you. I do too. We have had enough. This week is chaotic but when things calm down, I will post our system with images on my profile. Again, I thank you all so much for your advice!

Spoiler alert : Folks switch pool service to pool service expecting different results when it's the method and the education of those involved that's the root of the issue.

New dude. Different hat. Same ole nonsense.
