Safe to swim vs Comfortable to swim

Brain was cogitating today - a dangerous condition for a pool rookie - and I see that swimming up to SLAM levels is considered safe.

My question of the moment is; will swimmers notice a difference between a higher level of FC for the CYA level vs target vs minimum? Comfort, odor or whatever.

If perceived difference is low it seems sensible to me to elevate FC levels markedly prior to a pool party for example to ensure minimum FC level is not breached by swimmer load. What is the consensus on how to react to these type of events?

(Probably been discussed as nauseum on the forum but alas, my search-fu is weak)

I personally have never noticed any discomfort up to slam level - I do take extra care to rinse the bathing suits after if slamming.
For parties I raise to a scootch above high target before & after. The only comments I have ever had are “your pool is so clean & sparkly” & “feels so nice”,
the kids often mention they like that they can open their eyes in my pool & it doesn’t bother them unlike “usual”.

Just remember that SLAM FC (FC/CYA=40%) is equivalent to FC=0.64ppm with no CYA, I think I listed a few numbers in your other thread as examples.

At any public indoor pool you will likely be exposed to 3-4ppm FC without CYA to moderate the strength. This would be in terms of HOCl roughly equivalent to about FC/CYA=80%, or twice the SLAM-FC. With CYA=60ppm this would be around FC=50ppm.

I raise my FC based on the expected bather load. If a family or two is coming to enjoy an afternoon, I'll half SLAM @ 14 FC. If it's a blowout party with many kids, it's full SLAM @ 28FC.

With a liquid chlorine pool, I'd full SLAM everytime at 12 or 16, CYA depending.

Quick Q - Do you add the LC before or after the party?

Do you add the LC before or after the party?
Both. Before to start with lots of wiggle room, and after for any residuals left behind. Again, the scope of the get together will come into play. If it's a smaller swim day, I'll verify after the party that I have plenty FC to spare and dose if need be.

For the graduation party we're having in June, I'll dose to SLAM before going to bed and expect to find it nice and clear when I wake up the next day.

If you've got a big pool the amount of LC to reach SLAM from below minimum is going to be $$.
Yes and no. My SWG lifespan costs about 18 cents an hour to run and I'll let it do most of the work before and after. For a lighter bather load event it will easily handle all of it.

Even if I was to run it at 100% 2 days before and after, it's under $17 and change off the lifespan costs to not lift a finger. Ok ok. I'd 'lift a finger' and press a button a couple.of times. Boohoo. :ROFLMAO:

The benefits of oversizing greatly outweigh the costs.

Hmm...planning ahead. You appear to have identified my weak point good Ser!

Both!
The first is to make sure you get through the party without ever dipping too low (especially if swim diapers, sunscreen etc. are involved) the second is to finish off oxidizing all the lovely bather waste byproducts from said sunscreens/tanning products 🧴 urinators etc.
