Rust on 3 Year Old Doughboy

We were removing the original overlap liner to replace it with a hook and bead liner. Only to find our 3 year old pool has a great deal of rust in multiple spots. The pool had no leaks that I know of, so I am very concerned this happened. Not a saltwater pool.

Contacted the retailer to see what the Doughboy warranty will cover. If we end up stuck with this one, do I just sand down and paint over?

Hopefully They should cover it as it is quite new.

No, it is fully above ground. No sprinklers near by, no leaks visible by the skimmer or return.
This huge section of rust is on the inside near where my kids splash the most, as it faces the yard and not a fence line.
 
Reading the warranty, it looks like at the start of year 4 (which was 2 weeks ago) they make the consumer cover 55% of the replacement cost and I may have to package it and ship it to the deal to be assessed?

The more I read the more it seems I will be having to fix it on my own.

Sorry your “lifetime warranty” is the pits
If it’s just surface rust & the wall is still solid you can sand it down, apply rust converter/inhibitor & paint it with rustoleum .

Hello! I have a 27ft AGP (in NY) and noticed this today: Our pool is not opened yet and the holes are about where the current water level is. From my limited research, my plan would be: A) lower the water some more (maybe 5-6 inches below the holes) B) pop 2 or 3 of the top rails C) peel back...

My theory is the rust gets started due to condensation forming between the liner and the inner pool wall. I found out after my pool failed that there was significant surface rust on the inner wall, much more than I expected based on how the exterior looked. My liner never leaked.

My sister's Vogue pool was under warrenty when it failed. They were willing to replace the wall and damaged parts, but she would be responsible for shipping costs. It was almost as much as a new pool!

If Doughboy's warranty is not going to cover replacement costs then I would clean up the surface rust and give it a good layer of rustproofing paint before installing the new liner.

Thank you for sharing the other post. As to the liner, I had never really liked the overlap liner that we originally got. Recently I was teaching my teenage son how to test the water and manage the pool, and it started to turn green. When he was helping me SLAM, there was an accident with the bleach pour and levels. It stained the liner. So when I saw a good deal on a nice pattern hook liner, I decided to splurge and just view the old one as a good teachable moment for my teen as he was learning how to help. Glad it all happened, as otherwise I wouldn't have known until the rust ate through.

Yikes, I'm sorry your sister went through that. I sent the retailer more photos the manufacturer requested, but I'm thinking I will just go ahead and start repairing. Doughboy wanted pictures with everything still assembled, but I had already taken apart the skimmer and the pump as well as part of the top rails. That's the whole reason I was able to see rust behind the liner.

Aww man!
I got a big bleach spot on my last pool liner the day I put it up
It was an intex style pool & I had a trichlor floater in it while filling, it was unlevel so I had to drain it to re level & forgot to pull the floater out.
Let us know what you see when you get the liner all the way out. Hopefully its all surface rust
