Rust around skimmer

I have a bunch of hard rust looking stuff in my skimmer. Is this actual rust or some sort of fungus buildup? What can I do to get rid of it?

First order of business is to determine what it is. Turn off the system so you can try a couple things without the water disturbing you. Try a Vitamin C tablet to see if it's iron. Next try some cal-hypo if you have some to see if it's organic.

Sure. Just take a tablet (not gummy) and rub it on the stain. Vitamin C can usually lift iron.
