Can running the chlorine levels at the high end of recommendation risk fading things? Per TFP recommendations, I've kept the chlorine at 8-9 ppm most of the time. My CYA had gotten a touch low (tested at 50 a couple days ago, have added 3.5 lbs so far since then, need to retest) Yesterday I noticed that the portion of the liner just under the water line was much lighter than above it. I also recall noticing a floatie that stayed in the pool for a few days last year, had a line that was obviously faded where it was touching the water.

So I'm wondering if the somewhat high chlorine levels could be responsible? Perhaps I'm over-estimating my CYA and have been running really hot all this time? Pool store measured it at 68 today (see my iron post, that is what I really wanted to know) so it'll be interesting to see what I measure later tonight.

What else could cause what seems like extra fading under the water line? I tried to get a pic of the difference at waterline yesterday, if one worked I'll edit and add it.

The normal water level is around the bottom blue "stones" in the arch design. You can see they are a little lighter (and everything else too) than above that line.

I basically took these pics with the burst mode going, as I splashed water to get it to go below the normal line a couple times.

How old is the liner?

Our liner has completely faded below the water line, but it is 20 years old. This is just a guess on my part, but I think at any chlorine level high enough to keep the pool sanitary and clear, the liner will eventually fade. Also, I imagine some liners/colors may be more chlorine resistant than others? I think I remember reading somewhere around here that blue tends to be more susceptible to fading?

Is the rest of the liner fading? Is the fading consistent around the pool. Is this side in the sun? That is likely the sun through a small amount of water causing a magnifying glass effect.

I've done nothing different but move from a shaded yard to a wide open yard, and my new pool is almost as faded on year 3 as the old one was on year 8.5.

So I'm blaming the UV. The 2 walls that take the brunt of the sun are lighter than the other 2. The floor is lighter than the walls and the 18 inch deep bench is very light. Of it was the FC, it'd be even all over.

I think the sellers of the house said the liner was new in like 2018 or so.

The pic is actually the south side of the pool. The blue on that side is a little less faded than the rest, so UV is very likely taking a toll. Though the line is visible on all sides.

But what about the floatie dinosaur? It's printed design is lighter where it laid in the same position, floating around in the water.

I also have a "watermelon ball" that fades when in the water for a while, though it regains it's green once out for a day or two.
