Rookie pool owner in NC

I'm from the UK originally but now living in coastal NC in Wilmington for the past 8 years. My wife spent most of that time going on about getting a pool so finally we, um, took the plunge a couple of years back. Pool was installed in January 2022 (they had an 8 month wait list).

So far its been pretty easy to maintain. The pool company gave us some initial training and said we could learn more from youtube and the internet, and that's what I've done.

I quite enjoy cleaning the pool but my wife offered to do it a couple of weeks back and then moaned the entire time about how much it sucked having to clean it, so she ordered a robot - a Dolphin Nautilus CC. That's what prompted me to sign up, as I'm trying to work out why the thing ignores parts of the pool, while going over other parts repeatedly.

The key is not to watch it...

Does it actually complete a cycle and leave dirt in the pool? If it leaves dirt that is not normal.

I say this all the time, but here it is again. If I have one dime-size leaf in my pool and turn the robot on, when it is finished with its cycle, the leaf will be gone 90% of the time. And 100% of the time if I have to run two cycles. It I watch it, it must "know", as it won't go near the leaf.

Don't believe the marketing that it maps your pool. Total Bull Feathers.

Edit.. If you can see the tracks of where the robot goes, that is not a robot issue.

Yes, its completing the cycle and telling me that in the app. Its the same each of the 3 times I've run it, it skips the shallow end and the ledge at the shallow end. A couple of times it has climbed onto the ledge and cleaned a little of it. After it finished its cycle I picked it up on the cable, plonked it back down on the dirt and started it up again - it made straight for the deep end. I did this 6 times one after the other to get most of the shallow end clear, but that doesn't really seem like a solution for something that is supposed to be automatic. Rest of the pool looks great - its just the shallow end is still dirty every time. I've contacted their support to see if we have a dud - will update when I hear back from them.

Not unusual to get poor results from bots on shallow steps or ledges. The unit will sense when it is sucking air and change course for deeper water. Brushing shallow steps or ledges before running the bot is the only solution.

Just to be clear...

There is a difference between a shallow end that is 3' deep and a sun deck that is 16" deep.

Robots don't do ledges, steps or sun decks. They also will not do beach entry style pools.

They should do normal shallow ends.

yes, this is the shallow end, its just under 4ft deep. For some reason the robot skips most of it and just heads to the deep end and cleans that over and over again. The ledge is around 2ft or so perhaps, its on this page, the Riviera 34
