I've been playing around with trying to find the best angle on my return fittings. My fittings don't really have an adjustable eyeball. I believe this is what I have Pentair 540014. You have to either screw/unscrew the entire fitting to rotate the angle. The problem is that in order to achieve certain angles, the fitting is almost entirely unscrewed and feels unsecure. Am I doing this wrong?

Those are 3 pieces. There's a threaded coupler, an eyeball and a threaded cap. Take it out completely and disassemble it. You may need channel locks (gently) to remove the part threaded into the wall.

Then lube and screw in the coupler hand tight, and lube the eye and cap. Assemble it somewhat snug, adjust the eyeball and then tighten the cap a little.

Are you saying there actually is an adjustable eyeball, but it's just all too tight? I stared at this thing underwater for so long, and convinced myself that the eyeball and the cap were 1 solid piece. I'll take a look again.

Yup. Ask me how I know. :laughblue:

If you don't regularly adjust them they seize up. My own stayed frozen for 5 years or so until I realized it. Lube is a double edged sword as it will be easier to crank too much pressure on the wall fitting, so go gentle. Once the cap is on you're no longer sure which part is tightening once it gets snug. But it'll also make the fitting easier to adjust for most if not all the season.
