Replacing SP1023 Return Gasket on Fiberglass Pool Steps?

I am replacing my vinyl liner and ordering all new gaskets and face plates. Although not a part of the liner, the black rubber gaskets on my fiberglass pool stairs always run black residue, as they are deteriorating. I made the mistake of not knowing how the SP1023 returns are installed. It appears that this gasket is not replaceable without accessing the back of the stairs. Is this correct? With the pipe wrench, I rotated the fitting loose, but then tightened it back up since it clearly wasn't coming off. I boogered it up in the process. Should I be concerned with leaks now? Should I back it out and use some caulk/silicone? Do people just leave this 20 year old gasket in when replacing the liner?
