So I have a single speed Hayward Power-Flo Matrix M/N: SP5500Z2 and it sounds like it is strained while it is running, almost like a pebble is bouncing off the impeller. I have checked the impeller, and there is no debris there so I figure the bearing has started to go on it. If I am reading the serial number right the pump is from 2008. I have been kicking around replacing it with a dual or variable speed pump.

My question is, how do I determine which pumps would be sized properly for my pool/filter?

Welcome to the forum!
When it comes to VS motors/pumps, there is no such thing as one being too big. They are truly variable HP and thus you just run them at the speed needed to perform the function you need. The higher hp versions (3+hp) you can run at a lower rpm and thus less electrical usage to move the same amount of water as a lower hp version running at higher rpm and more electrical usage.
I suggest you read through Pool School - Trouble Free Pool and even look at a few of our videos TFP-TV - Trouble Free Pool
