Replace entire filter or just bottom?

I’m not sure I am going to DE. My cartridge housing is cracked so I have to replace it. I’ve been trying to decide if I wanted to change to something else or not. I’ve ruled out sand but someone suggested DE. I will probably just get the same thing I have again but wanted to understand my options a little better first.

I plan to switch to a Clean & Clear when the time comes. While I’ve certainly had good results with my Quad and it’s an excellent filter, I’d really rather get away from the mess of DE. I have to discharge my filter when cleaning into my yard and the spent DE leaves a mess. If it went into the sewer line, then it wouldn’t be an issue, but I can’t do that. Since I never backwash and only clean it once per year, it’s basically just like a big cartridge filter.

If I were you, I’d just go with what you know ... and yes, sand filters are a terrible option here in the desert.
