Removing Leaf basket cover; CaliMar 1.5 Variable pump

I can not remove the cover for the leaf basket on my 1.5 HP CaliMar Variable pump.

I purchased the pump with the specified unions for my 2" PVC plumbing. I had a professional install the pump. On the output port, the collar of the union overlaps the cover and sits tightly over the cover. I can twist the cover but there is no clearance to lift and remove the cover. How is this possible?

I have been trying to get some help from the pool supply vendor who specified the union, and also from CaliMar. CaliMar says that NONE of their customers have encountered this issue. However, they have not explained how that is possible with dimensions of the specified union. Obviously, it requires a union with a longer dimension, about 1.5" more, leading out of the output port.

Does anyone else have this pump with a union to a 2" PVC which allows the cover to be removed?

I believe you need a 1.5" union. This from CMP should give you the room you need:

Thank you!
That is exactly what I was assuming existed somewhere.

The above is for 1.5" PVC. Mine is 2", so I contacted the vendor and they did have one for 2" PVC.

I cannot understand why CaliMar was completely unaware of this union,
of the problem which they designed into their pumps,
and they were unable, mostly unwilling to find this simple solution!
Pure engineering failure.

TFP tried to find a fix. Their solution was a 1.5" extension PVC, for me to cut down to size.

( but the extension they sent was labeled as 1.5" and was, in reality, 2" in diameter. ??? )

wierd, but then again so it goes with these types of things, I guess that's just the 1.5hp pump as the 3hp doesn't have that issue.
