Recapping steel walls

New to this forum, forgive me if I am posting in wrong section.

I have a pool that was installed with galvanized walls but it settled over the years on one corner. It has not moved or settled any more in over 15 years, but I need a new liner and everyone is telling me to rip it out and replace the pool. All plumbing and operation is good. No leaks. No bows or wall issues. Just out of level.

I am dealing with one corner about two inches (lower) out of level on a 18x36 pool. Of course the pool will be drained, prepped by removing all concrete and coping to expose the top of all the walls. My idea is to run up a sheet metal cap over the existing wall and basically create a new “level” Cap On the wall sections that need leveled. This process would allow infinite adjustment on any wall section the cap is applied to. Once leveled, Secure into place, reinstall foam layers as needed. Install new cantilevered coping in place of the old round coping on entire pool.

Has anyone done this? I may be the first to try it! Haha

Any advise on this issue is welcome. Thanks

It can be done but you need structural support not just rolled sheetmetal. You would have to make a metal form and fill all voids with concrete and mortar. Make sure you install cantilever coping before you pack the concrete so you aren't fighting zip screws

Make sure you saw cut the current slab away from coping about 7 to 8" and demo the deck first. Then relief cut the remaining and carefully chip it out. The concrete is under the lips and all around the braces. I've seen a few pools ruined by improper slab demo. Be careful

Also need to deal with the stairs. Cantilever stairs are different and shorter height with different rise and run. No real way to do cantilever over them without changing them out. Either butt to them or swap them. If swapping an upgrade to liner over is nice

Thanks for the tips. I am in agreement about being careful when doing the demo of the deck.
Meeting with a liner guy this week and will be discussing what to do with the steps. I’d like to do some corner entry steps with liner over steel, but could live with replacing existing with new cantilevered fiberglass steps. We’ll see what costs are.

Yea I agree, I really like the look of the liner over steps. I see the price is about the same also. I finally found an experienced pool installer that is willing to allow me to do most of the work myself. He had the same suggestion about making a saw cut 12-18" from the edge to demo the deck, carefully. He has no issues with the plan I have for demo the deck, recapping the walls, new coping, liner, testing plumbing, new skimmers, steps etc. For now, we are opening pool for summer and will begin demo in August. Thanks for the info here too, I feel pretty confident about tackling this project! So glad I found TFP!

I’m starting the tear down of my pool and I’m having trouble finding any pool wall sections. No one will sell individual wall sections. I need to fill in the wall sections where I am removing the 8’ fiberglass steps in prep for liner over steps upgrade. Any suggestions on who sells wall sections or am I stuck with replacing fiberglass ? Thanks

Hired a pool company and everyone involved to tear out old concrete and expose walls. We ended up building up the top rails to level the pool and poured a new concrete collar with cantilevered coping. Pretty solid solution. Took out fiberglass steps and spa. Overall… retaining wall, demo, replumb, add new wall sections, pavers, and liner finish was right at 70k.

what did you use to build up the wall height where you have the liner track screwed to the wood blocks? did you use sheet metal in the inside then pour concrete under the coping?
