Questions about regent brands and my Frankenstein test kit.

My test kit consists of the Taylor DPD I bought seperate, my CYA test is also Taylor regent. My PH and everything else is HTH.

What’s the general opinion on this?

Is the HTH kit acceptable for PH and ALK?

I’m vinyl and done use cal hypo so I don’t test calcium often but I have that HtH too.

Also I run the DPD about every 3 days when my pool is clear and often use the OTO just to make sure I have chlorine registering. Is this acceptable?

Sorry, I had a real rough start this year with two weeks of filtering out cloudy water. Tried to add the DE but my pump didn’t like it and kept dropping pressure to zero so it took forever.

Finally got it TFP worthy and want to keep it that way.

What you're doing is fine and may work well for you until you use everything up. The pH and TA tests are fairly straight-forward drop tests, so your results should be quite close. Many owners use the FAS-DPD periodically and use the OTO each day, so you're not alone. But once you exhaust all the HTH stuff, I'd go to TFTestkits.net for refills just to ensure you're using fresh products.

Haha yeah as I started doing TFP methods I alreday had the hth kit that has CYA in it, only it only had enough regent for two tests so I just got more regent. Just started patching together a kit.

I still use my OTO just to make sure chlorine is registering. I hate to use my DPD regent when the pool is clear so I just do that every 3 days or so.

Do need to invest in a speed stir though. I so understand why that’s so important. Gets old fast swirling that tube.

This is our 1st season for TFP, so still in the process of switching testing materials/reagents & while a learning curve, it's great! And POOLMATH makes it easy!

Taylor reagents are slowly replacing the HTH reagents/supplies in my new TFP case that I find very handy! I still use my HTH comparator for PH testing as I don't want to buy yet another comparator (have 2 already from the past 30 yrs of owning this pool).

I test chlorine daily via FAS-DPD but as soon as I relax a bit, will switch to every few days & use the HTH daily. Being new to TFP, my fear with these brutally hot days is going under the minimum FC & getting an algae bloom, so testing daily via FAS-DPD & keeping the FC above the target high....A bit obsessive, but had algae from Aug on last summer due to too-high CYA and not knowing about TFP!

Hoping to keep our pool "TFP Worthy" too. So far, it's working! (but I always still have questions! lol)

Gotta be careful. You can't mix/match reagents or tubes. So the HTH reagent has to be used with the HTH test and tube. Can't buy Taylor reagent for the HTH test and so on.....
