question on tile coming off and cantilever coping

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of getting quotes to resurface and retile my pool. 2 of the 4 contractors pointed out the tile falling off can only be repaired by replacing the coping. The existing coping is cantilever and would require being cut out and replaced with what ever coping material I choose. Wanted to check with the experts here since 2 of the 4 contractors mentioned this, the other 2 said it's possible to replace the grout and tile while applying mastic between the tile and coping.

I've been at this house for more than 10 years now (about the time when i joined TFP), and there were some tiles coming off initially and the amount that have popped off have probably doubled in this time frame and only on this side of the pool. To me it looks like the previous owner painted the plaster and retiled while applying grout all the way to the cantilever coping.

2 of the 4 contractors are trying to sell you on a bigger, pricier job.
When I had my pool replastered in 2005, I had all the tile replaced. Mine has a cantilevered deck like that. No problem. They just tile to the proper level and mastic or grout between the tile & deck. Plaster up to the tile.

The deck is moving during expansion from heat, it’s pushing out over the pool because it’s unable to move due to the house. It needs an expansion joint at the house that is completely cut through the deck to dirt and deck-o-seal with backer rod placed in that void.

The two contractors telling you to replace the coping are correct.

What they are saying is the cantilevered expansion joint is compromised and no longer effective at separating your deck from your bond beam. I can see the signs of it in your pic. You need to fix your expansion joint problem for any tile repair to last.

I appreciate that link regarding coping. In reading that link it looks like cantilever coping requires a plastic sheet or roofing felt in between the deck and top of the bond beam. On my pool in the pictures I can see that plastic sheet there. It looks like to me that it's there for the deck to float, and the previous tile installation was done with grout all the way to the bottom of the deck making it a rigid connection between tile and deck. My thought is the new tile can be installed with grout but using mastic or epoxy grout between the tile and deck to provide that flexibility.

Another question is the canilever coping and deck supported by the pool's bond beam? by cutting out the cantilever coping and replacing with new coping will that lead to the existing deck possibly sinking?
