Good Morning! We had our pool put in last summer...over the course of the year the coping has gotten worse and worse looking, what can we advise our builder to do this time so we don't have these results? It's like its stained or a poor quality pre cast concrete....would you suggest a different material? Different sort of moisture block or grout?
For the plaster we did regular plaster - it looked bad right after install - so the builder offered to acid wash. It made it worse. It now has terrible pitting - and looks bleached out. We are going with a pebble product by Adams pools - any advice on what to advise builder of prior, what to look for, and what to do besides brush? I ask since our builder does not have any sort of project manager overseeing the job, so it's on me.....

That’s weird coping appearance. What does the original builder say about the coping?

Hi @Bperry he tells me it's normal...no explanation. I know it's not normal. It looks like this in over 100 degree weather, and no one has been in the pool for weeks. To me it looks like part of the problem is the concrete was not cured completely at the site - then, maybe there was no moisture block under it? And/or the incorrect grouting was used? Just want to know what to look for as there are no checks and balances with builder.

You might ask him to show you another example of it cause it’s not likely anyone else has seen it. Ask for a color sample? If it’s concrete I might try power washing it. I’d have to guess they sealed it with something and then grouted the joints.

What's odd is that he told me another homeowner was unhappy with it, so they painted the concrete....The painted concrete coping looked like a band aid to me, certainly not something I would expect with new construction. Can't seem to get any concrete answers from him (pun intended) so we will be replacing, just want to make sure it doesn't happen again....

Painting is not a great idea. Is this a new contractor replacing or the same one? Hopefully you didn’t pay the first guy.

Unfortunately it's the same guy...he was paid in full....He won't give us the money back, so the only option is to have him re-do it...I'm just worried it's going to be the same outcome.

Is the coping the same manufacturer or another concrete precast? Did the manufacturer have any ideas why it happened?
I am asking for a different manufacturer this time - the manufacturer (owner) came out and had no idea why it happened. Said he would fix it, then never returned my calls again.....

That’s too bad on the manufacturer. It was either their particular batch/product or how it was installed. Masonry here left behind two bags, one of grout and I think one of thinset but I got rid of them before taking pics (didn’t think about that or saving the material). But if you have any pics it could be a clue.

Getting a pool shouldn’t be this tough or stressful. Clearly something is wrong. Glad it’s getting fixed. Hoping this time it works out.

Eek. I'd be unhappy too. I'm wondering if it should have been sealed somehow. Or if maybe sealing it now would help give it a more uniform look?

If I had to guess I’d say they sponged some of the grout over the edge of the joints and didn’t clean it up well enough.

Thank you! Lesson learned....never again will I make the same mistakes!
